Maite Parejo (Spain)

Maite Parejo is a practicing lawyer specializing in criminal law, international criminal law, and human rights. She is currently a partner at MAIO Legal and a lecturer at the International University of La Rioja (UNIR). Since 2017, she has been a member of the Advisory Council of the National Mechanism against Torture, attached to the Ombudsman’s Office, and since 2023 has co-chaired the Human Rights Observatory of the Madrid Bar Association, where she leads the Human Rights and Business working group.

Parejo is a member of the Steering Committee of Spain’s Second National Human Rights Plan under the Secretary of State for Relations with the Courts and Constitutional Affairs. She previously served as Secretary General (2013–2016) and Vice-President (2016–2019) of the Spanish Human Rights Association. Internationally, she has contributed to the World Organisation Against Torture’s Working Group on Migration and Torture (2019–2022).

Her research focuses on international criminal law, transitional justice, universal jurisdiction, corruption, and humanitarian law. She regularly participates in national and international seminars, and has authored publications on human rights and accountability.
