ICAM Human Rights Observatory

The ICAM Human Rights Observatory was established by agreement of the Governing Board of the Madrid Bar Association (ICAM) on October 27, 2023. It was created to provide the Bar Association with an operational structure to analyze and assess various areas related to human rights, strengthening its role in the promotion and defense of these rights both nationally and internationally.

Context and Objectives:

  • Strengthening ICAM’s Role: The Observatory is part of ICAM’s broader effort to become a more influential institution with greater social impact, in line with the values of the legal profession in defending human rights.
  • Analysis and Diagnosis: Its core mission is to identify and assess challenges in the field of human rights, both within Spain and globally.
  • Collaboration: The Observatory seeks to collaborate with other institutions and stakeholders committed to the defense of the rule of law and human rights promotion.

Recent Milestones:

  • Commemorative Event: Organized its first commemorative event for the 75th Anniversary of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights.
  • Transitional Justice Forum: Hosted conferences addressing Transitional Justice in collaboration with other organizations.
  • Working Groups: Launched a Working Group on Business and Human Rights to foster legal profession engagement in due diligence and corporate accountability.
